Sharpen those axes and pull on those work boots...the 11th annual Lumberjack Heritage Festival des bûcherons.
With free admission to the park being offered once again, Riverside Park will be the place to be during day on Saturday and Sunday. Only a slight chance of showers is being forecast for Saturday, so chances are that Mother Nature will smile upon the festival, weather-wise, this year.
Friday night will feature a tribute to some of the biggest pre-teen acts of the day: Hannah Montana, the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato. The older crowd can take in the unique sounds of Dry County, who describe themselves as AC/DC meets Alabama.
Of course, the big draw for many people is the Saturday night concert by veteran Canadian rocker Tom Cochrane, one of the biggest name acts ever to grace the festival stage. Tickets are still available for the show, so don't wait.
Opening the show for Tom is Hearst group Mellow Man. Usually a popular draw when they play in town, the group will be belting out Top 40 hits in French and in English.
That will not be the only opportunity to see local talent though. Local performers are welcome to call the KEDC at 335-2244 to book a time slot on the Civic Centre Stage, which will be open for local acts to perform during the day on Saturday.
Once again the Amateur Lumberjack competition ($8,000 in prizes this year folks, book your team now) and the professional lumberjack show are back. New this year is a tire-changing competition sponsored by Matco Tools and helicopter rides that will be lifting off from the Gore.
Although the arm wrestling competition and the lumberjack parade are cancelled, the heavy horsepull is back, returning to the parking lot behind The Northern Times office.
And while 200 to 250 volunteers have already been tapped to help make the festival a success, there are a couple of duties that still need some support. Anyone interested in volunteering as a camp ground coordinator at the Carlo Cattarello Sports Complex, stage hands for the nightly concerts or as 50/50 ticket sellers can call the KEDC at 335-2244.
