Young sledder collides with vehicle


(KAPUSKASING, ON) - On January 23, 2018, at approximately 1:45 p.m., Kapuskasing officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a motor vehicle collision without injuries on Ash Street in the Town of Kapuskasing.


Police investigation revealed that two youths operating Motorized Snow Vehicles (MSV) eastbound on an Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) trail failed to stop for traffic on Ash Street resulting in one MSV striking a northbound motor vehicle. The investigation is ongoing at this time.


The OPP would like to remind MSV owners and operators to abide by provincial and municipal laws.


Police are advising the public that MSV operators must be 16 years of age and hold a driver's licence or a motorized snow vehicle operator's licence to legally drive across or along the roadway.


Police would also like to remind MSV owners and operators that it is illegal to remove, modify or render inoperative any component or device, such as a muffler, on their MSV which was required under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act of Canada.


The permission or prohibition to use MSVs within town or city limits is determined by the municipality.


The OPP would like emphasize the importance knowing and abiding by the law which will increase safety for everyone in our community.
