It started as a pump-and-run arrest and turned into a high-speed pursuit across the 407 involving six police cruisers, before the suspect ditched the SUV and set it on fire.
Peel Regional Police are on the hunt for a man who drove at officers outside 22 Division — in the Hurontario St. and Hwy. 407 area in Brampton — before fleeing westbound on Hwy. 407.
Investigators noticed a white Dodge Durango in the north parking lot at police headquarters — located at the same address as the division — around 9:30 p.m. Friday and upon running a plate check, officers discovered it was stolen and had been involved in a string of petty gas thefts throughout the GTA.
“When officers were approaching the vehicle in the parking lot, the vehicle drove at the officers and one of the officers fired a single shot into the vehicle,” said Const. Rachel Gibbs. “Police pursued the vehicle ... after several minutes, the pursuit was discontinued by police.”
Then, at around 7 a.m. Saturday, police were alerted to another pump-and-run attempt with a vehicle matching the same description in the Meadowvale area of Mississauga. Officers found the Durango ablaze under an overpass at Meadowvale Town Centre Cir. and Glen Erin Dr.
“It appears to be deliberately set on fire,” said Gibbs.
Tina Crangle, who lives near the overpass, said she noticed the orange glow through the tunnel while the vehicle was still burning.
“We woke up to a ‘pop,’ so I don’t know if it was the tires blowing out,” she said. “I saw flames and it was all lit up and there was smoke coming out. I saw the K-9 Unit and an officer with a shotgun.”
Police are looking for a black male, with light skin, wearing a blue vest.
There were no reported injuries.
The Durango was stolen from a car rental company at the airport, Gibbs said. Investigators will also review video footage from the division parking lot.
