Federal finance minister selects his budget shoes

TORONTO -

Is the next step a balanced budget?

Federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver fulfilled a longstanding pre-budget tradition Monday morning by purchasing a pair of new shoes — grey and blue New Balance runners.

The minister arrived at The Shoe Company at Bathurst St. and Lawrence Ave. in Toronto and bought a pair of sneakers after trying them on.

“OK, I’m ready for the budget,” he said, appearing relaxed.

Oliver was in and out of the store within minutes, as cameras followed his every move.

He didn’t reveal any details about this year’s budget, which is to be announced Tuesday afternoon.

“This is going to be a great budget for Canada and for all Canadians from coast to coast and from all walks of life,” he said.

When a reporter came forward with a question as the minister was leaving, Oliver simply said, “Tomorrow we’ll see what happens.”

The federal budget for 2015 was put off until this month due to the plunging price of oil at the start of the year.
