OPP are investigating after a tractor trailer's fuel tank was pierced and spilled diesel over the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 417 just past the Eagleson Rd. exit. The mess turned Tuesday morning rush hour into a nightmare and could continue for some time -- police aren't sure the fuel can be cleaned up because of the heavy rains and say the road may have to be repaved. Hwy. 417 could be closed all day — or longer — after diesel leaked out of a tractor-trailer following a crash Tuesday morning.

Around 3:30 a.m., another truck was headed eastbound on Hwy. 417 near Eagleson Rd. when some pieces of metal became unsecured from the back and flew off onto the road. Perhaps unaware of this, the truck driver continued driving.

Another truck came along and struck the metal, causing the crash.

Damage was done to the truck`s fuel tank, causing its diesel supply to spill out onto the road surface and OPP Const. Rheal Levac believes the clean-up could take at least a day.

“It’s been made worse by the rain,” he said. “It’s already slippery with the wet surface and the diesel just makes it worse.”

Levac said road crews may have no choice but to scrape the pavement and have the section re-paved, which could take longer than a day.

Hwy. 417’s eastbound lanes have been reduced to one lane at Eagleson and the northbound ramp to Hwy. 417 eastbound is closed.

The crash in under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the OPP at 613-270-9171.
