TORONTO -

The troubles of entertainer Justin Bieber are bringing out the maternal instinct in Premier Kathleen Wynne.

“It’s hard for me to think about Justin Bieber who is such a talented young Canadian kids from Stratford, it’s hard for me to think about him other than as a mum,” Wynne said Friday. “He’s a 19-year-old boy, young adult, who’s really been on such a fast track since he was 14 years old.

“I really hope that there are people around him who are going to be able to circle around him with the love that he, I know, deserves and needs, and support him so he can get on track and stay on track.”

The Ontario-born teen superstar was arrested in Miami this week on charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with an expired licence.

Bieber still has the potential of a hugely successful career in front of him, Wynne said.

“I just hope that the whirlwind that he lives in doesn’t prevent him from being healthy,” she said. “I see him as a very young adult that still needs some support from the people who live him and I really hope he gets that.”

Wynne made the comments at a Toronto Community Centre where she announced that her government would launch a Health Kids Community Challenge to provide 30 communities with funding, training and other resoures over four years for local programs and activities that promote healthy activities for children.

Wynne was joined by Canadian Olympic beach volleyball athlete Martin Reader, who credited his home community of Vancouver Island for helping launch his sporting career.

“I had opportunities to do whatever I wanted,” he said. “I could have sailed, I could have been a skiier … it was an amazing community that really helped me out.”
