Councillor Pam McConnell said it felt like she was sacked by a “raging bull” when Mayor Rob Ford ploughed her over on the floor of city council.
Ford knocked McConnell down during a chaotic moment at Monday’s city council meeting.
The Toronto Centre-Rosedale (Ward 28) councillor said Tuesday she was “feeling a little bit better” after a visit to a chiropractor.
“He just basically mowed me down; I have no idea what was on his mind, it was quite befuddling to me,” McConnell said. “It felt like and it looked like a raging bull and I don’t know quite what that was about but it was certainly someone that was out of control.”
Ford got into a shouting match with people in the public gallery in the council chamber during Monday’s debate about stripping him of his powers.
When he spotted Councillor Doug Ford engaged in a shouting match with the public, the mayor raced around the edge of the council chamber trying to come to his brother’s rescue and ended up bowling over McConnell.
She had to be helped up by Ford’s staff and was left with a fat lip that she nursed throughout the rest of the meeting.
Video of the run-in was played on news programs and late-night comedy shows around the world on Monday night.
McConnell admitted it could have been worse, pointing out she fell just inches from a glass divider.
“I’m feeling exceedingly lucky like I somehow had angels on my shoulders yesterday,” she added.
She said her brothers were mad when they first heard she was hit. Once they found out she was OK, they joked they’ll send her some protection for the next council meeting.
“My brothers told me they were going to send me a helmet,” she said.
Asked about Ford’s behaviour at council Monday, Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly said he’s never seen anything like that before in his entire political career.
“I couldn’t tell you why he did it, but it certainly didn’t look good on him,” Kelly said.
